Solid or Engineered Hardwood: What’s the Difference?
Solid hardwood flooring, usually 5/8" to ¾" thick, can be sanded and refinished multiple times. However, it can be affected by changes in humidity and isn't recommended for basements. It's also common to find variations in width on planks over 3.1/4" inches.
On the other hand, engineered hardwood flooring is made of a layer of real wood glued to several layers of wood underneath. It's incredibly stable and can be installed anywhere in your home, including basements, without any variations in width.
Unfinished or Prefinished Hardwood: Which One's Right for You?
If you want a seamless installation that matches the color of your existing floor or a custom stain, unfinished hardwood flooring is the way to go. It's sanded and finished on-site after installation, so you'll need to wait a bit before walking on it. Prefinished hardwood flooring comes from the factory already sanded, stained, and sealed, so the installation process is quicker, and you can use your floor right away.
